What Can I Legally Tow?
from Western Towing – www.westerntowing.co.uk
“What I can legally tow,” is a question frequently asked at Western Towing. The towing legalities have been somewhat of a minefield for many years. The first changes were made to drivers passing their B-class tests after 1st January 1997. This law meant that they would need to take an extra test to tow up to 3.5-tonne gross weight.
The new towing laws revert back to the original class towing laws. This allows all B-class users to tow 3.5-tonne trailers without taking an extra test. The new towing laws give freedom to tow and come into place from 16th December 2021:
- Work trailers such as Plant trailers
- Caravans
- Horseboxes
- Camping Trailers
- Boat trailers
You are not expected to send away your license to have the details changed. The DVSA has said the changes and your new photocard will be sent automatically.
Drivers who passed their car test before 1st January 1997, known as those with “Grandfather Rights”, can already tow without a car and trailer test (BE). These drivers are not affected by this change.
Here at Western Towing, we would always encourage some basic training before towing but expect this news to come with mixed emotions from road users.
